CHARLTON'S AVERAGE END OF SEASON LEAGUE POSITIONS 1921-2017

LEAGUE POSITIONS AND THE JIMMY SEED ERA

In Sky's 'Ultimate League Table', which is based on clubs' end of season league positions over the last 50 years, Charlton are 30th, with an average league position of 32.46.

Based on Charlton's entire time in the Football League (starting in the 1921/22 season), and including the Premiership years, Charlton's average League position is 32.05, which must also be about 30th place.

From the time Charlton was admitted to the Football League, to the time when Jimmy Seed took over (12 seasons, 1921-1933), Charlton's average end of season league position was 49th

During the 24 year Jimmy Seed era (including the promotions from Div 3 & 2) it was 16th.

During the First Division years this drops to 11th (1936-1957).

That probably makes Charlton the 9th or 10th most successful club in the country over that period.

In the post Jimmy Seed era that average end of season league position is 32nd.

In the Alan Curbishley era (1991-2006) it was 21st, and he took over after Charlton had finished 36th in the 1990/91 season.

Seed managed the club for 730 matches, compared to 729, in a much shorter period, under Curbishley.
In Seed's era of course, there were only 42 League matches and any FA Cup matches to contend with.

Charlton's lowest ever end of season league position was 65th in 1925/26.
They finished second-to-last (21st) in League 3 (Southern Division) and had to apply for re-election.

During the 2016/7 season Charlton's position dipped as low as 59th, although the Robinson era,
after a sticky start, has brought a steady rise up at table, and a revitalised, more attacking style of football than Charlton fans have been used to, in recent years at least.

At the time of writing we've reached the dizzy heights of 47th. Onward and upwards!
